A Brief History From The Chevrolet 283

The first-generation 1957 and succeeding Corvettes featured a Ramjet fuel-injected 283 V-8.

The Chevrolet 283-cubic-inch V-8 was the Corvette's exclusive V-8 engine initiation in 1957 to 1961 when the 327 replaced it. The 283 continued to endowment other Chevys, most notably the Chevelle complete 1967. The automaker offered the 283 in host horsepower ratings and featured an optional, albeit rather unrefined, Ramjet fuel-injection process. Chevrolet engineers based the 283 on the 265 V-8 by enlarging the Muzzle from 3.75 to 3.875 inches.

Most intermediate-size passenger cars, such as the 1964 to 1967 Chevelles, were equipped with the two-barrel carb 283 that generated 195 horsepower or the four-barrel carb example that developed 220 horsepower. These 283s had a 9.25-to-1 compression ratio.

Applications

For the beginning generation, a V-8 powered the Corvette, giving it the precipitation it deserved. Although the tidy 265 could develope up to 240 horsepower when fitted with dual four-barrel carburetors and a high-lift cam, the motoring regular demanded augmented horsepower and amassed versatility in the V-8. Chevrolet enlarged the Muzzle by 0.125 inches and kept the 265's 3-inch stroke and 1.72/1.50-inch valves to breakthrough the engine's displacement to 283 cubic inches. The just out 283 then received the two- and four-barrel carbs, a dual quad carb setup or the mechanical Ramjet fuel-injection course. The fuel injection gave the 283 1 horsepower per cubic inch, which was book for 1957.

Corvette Connection

Although most Chevy cars received the 283 as an preference, the engine is most associated with the Corvette. In 1957 alone, there were three carbureted versions of the 283 with horsepower ratings ranging from 220 to 270, and two fuel-injection versions. Vettes equipped with an automatic transmission and fuel-injection generated 250 horsepower, while the tome transmission models with fuel injection developed 283 horsepower. The fuel-injected 283-horsepower 283 could stretch nonentity to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.3 seconds at 100 mph. In 1958, the minimum horsepower grading was 230, and the fuel-injection history got a boost in horsepower to 290. In 1961, the at the end year of the Corvette 283 before it gave path to the 327, the fuel-injection chronicle generated 315 horsepower.

General Horsepower Ratings

The early non-Corvette two-barrel 283s with a 9.5-to-1 compression ratio generated 170 horsepower and 275 foot-pounds of torque, while the four-barrel carb account developed 230 horsepower and 200 foot-pounds of torque. The dual quad carb setup boosted horsepower to 245 with a 300 foot-pound torque adjudjing. The fuel-injection versions featured an 11-to-1 compression ratio to develope up to 315 horsepower and 285 foot-pounds of torque.

Origins

The 265 V-8 nearly single-handedly rescued the 1955 Corvette from growth a failed sports machine experiment. The 1953 Corvette unreal its debut with a lacklustre in-line six-cylinder engine, and although the Vette looked alike a sports vehivle, it didn't perform cognate one. In 1955, Chevy introduced its small-block V-8, which gave aptitude to the newly designed 1955 passenger cars.

The 283 powered the Chevelle, Nova, Impala and El Camino among other Chevrolet cars. In 1965, Chevy supplied Checker taxis with the 283. Common Motors used a seperate anecdote of the 283 for its automotive lineup in Canada. Studebaker produced its 1965 and 1966 cars --- the Ending two dotage of Studebaker Industry --- with the Chevy 283 absent of its Canadian meeting plant.
