How to Change a Brake Light on a 1993 Grand Marquis

In 1992, Mercury redesigned the Grand Marquis, changing it from a boxy sedan to a more aerodynamic luxury vehicle. Though the overall look of the Grand Marquis changed with this redesign, the taillights remained as a horizontal bar on either side of the Marquis' rear end. Inside this assembly were three bulbs: one reverse light bulb, one stoplight-parking light combination bulb and one stoplight-turn signal combination bulb. Replacing the brake light in the 1993 Grand Marquis with this style of taillight assembly is a task that most do-it-yourself mechanics can perform.

Instructions

    1

Open the trunk and remove the screws (using a Phillips screwdriver) and the plastic wing nuts securing the carpeting behind the affected taillight assembly. Pull the carpeting down, exposing the rear of the taillight assembly.

    2

Remove the wing nuts from the rear of the taillight assembly. Remove the retaining nut on the far, outside part of the rear of the taillight assembly, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the taillight assembly from the Grand Marquis.

    3

Turn the taillight assembly over and locate the three bulb sockets on the rear of the assembly. Grab the socket of the burnt-out bulb and twist it counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull the socket and bulb from the taillight assembly.

    4

Pull the old bulb from the socket with a slight wiggling motion. Grab a new 3157 taillight bulb by its plastic base and press it into the Grand Marquis' taillight socket; make certain not to touch the glass part of the bulb with your hands, as oils from your hands will cause the bulb to burn out prematurely.

    5

Insert the socket and new 3157 bulb into the Mercury's taillight assembly and twist it clockwise to lock it in place.

    6

Set the taillight assembly back on the rear of the Grand Marquis and tighten the wing nuts. Tighten the taillight assembly retaining nut with a ratchet and socket.

    7

Place the carpet back over the rear of the taillight assembly and tighten its retaining screws (using a Phillips screwdriver) and the wing nuts. Close the Grand Marquis' trunk.
