car audio wiring guide-the nine steps

how to wire a car stereo

It is really a hard nut to crack at the mere thought of trying to wire car stereo on his own for the one with little knowledge in this aspect. While you can search out a variety of ways to wire different car stereos, you can still have the basic and universal way to wire car stereo. Go through the following to see how it’s supposed to be done.

Step 1
Get access to the factory stereo by taking apart the dashboard.

Step 2
Generally there are a couple of screws holding the old stereo in place. Unscrew them and pull the aftermarket car stereo out of the dash. ATTENTION: put away the screws in a right place and don’t lose them. Unhook the antenna connected to the right side of the stereo.

Step 3
On the rear of the stereo is a small clip holding the wiring harness in place. Push down on the clip to release the harness, which will disconnect the stereo from the dash.

Step 4
Install the mounting kit following the directions included with it. Attention: Not all mounting kits are identical so you are well advised to refer to manual for more information. Mount the new mount onto the new stereo accordingly by placing it over the face of the new oem car stereo.

Step 5
Secure the wiring harness from the new car stereo to the wiring harness of the factory stereo by carefully pushing it into place until you hear it click.  When there is not any wiring harness assembly, connect each wire individually. Here’s the way.

Strip the end of all the wires for the speakers, and the gps antenna, ¼ “.  The power and ground wires on both the old and new wires also require to be stripped to ¼”. Just use a pair of wire strippers for this process. Note: The use of a knife or other instrument can lead to damage to the wires. It may seem as if you’re left with a big bundle of stripper wires, but as long as you keep each set of wires grouped together you’ll be fine. Group each set by each speaker (4 sets if you have 4 speakers) one set for the antenna, and one set each for the power and ground.

Step 6
Twist the exposed ends of the corresponding wires together, which means that you need to connect the new wires to the old wires by matching the fire for each set. Use an electrical tape to tape off each connected end, which will prevent the wires from shorting out. NOTE: no guessing game is allowed when you can not match each set of wires according to the color. In this case, you had better refer to the manual or professionals.

Step 7
Reattach the antenna. Reconnect the antenna after connection of the harness, when you had a wiring harness.

Step 8
Slide all the wiring assemblies back into the dash and push your new stereo into the opening. Screw the new one on.

Step 9
Attach your new mounting system. And good work.

Now you have mastered how to wire a car stereo. If you don’t feel comfortable wiring a car stereo on your own, ask someone else to do it for you.
