Snow Roller - A Strange Cylindrical Snow Formation

A variety of strange snow formations are found around the world. One such strange snow formation is the snow roller in which large cylinders of snow are naturally forms. This rare meteorological phenomenon occurs as chunks of snow are blown along the ground by wind. Snow rollers are found mostly in North America and Northern Europe.

Snow rollers are typically cylindrical in shape and are often hollow. They happen with the combination of lying chunks of snow and high speed wind. The inner layers of these snow rollers form first and for this reason they are weak and thin compared to the outer layers. These layers can easily be blown away, leaving what looks like a doughnut or Swiss roll.

Snow rollers can be of different sizes depending on the strength of the wind and the smoothness of the surface. They can be from the ones as small as a tennis balls to the ones as large as large as two feet across. The smaller snow rolls can be blown by wind and a number of layers build up and the roll gets larger. Eventually the rolls become too big and can't be blown any further by the wind.
