How to Stop a Modine Leak

How to Stop a Modine Leak

Modine Manufacturing is a thermal management and heat transfer technologies manufacturer specializing in motor vehicles. Modine radiators differ from many other radiators because Modine radiators use a copper and brass surface as opposed to aluminum or plastic in the transfer of heat energy. In general, radiator leaks are common across several brands of radiator and a common solution is to use a leak-stop additive in the radiator to clog the leak and stop the loss of radiator fluid. However, this is not always effective. Modine has analyzed several modes of radiator failure and their common repairs.

Instructions

    1

Find the leak. Clean the radiator header and tube with water. Turn on the engine and inspect the header, hoses and tubes for leaks. Replace any leaking hoses or tubes, and solder the header if it is leaking.

    2

Inspect the radiator for solder bloom. This occurs when the coolant in the radiator system is neglected and rust or leak inhibitor corrodes the copper and brass in the Modine radiator causing leaks. Re-coring of the radiator can solve this problem.

    3

Check for electrolysis problems in the radiator by measuring any electrical current running through the coolant. A current of more than .10 volts in the coolant could indicate an electrolysis issue. Electrical current running in the coolant across the radiator can cause accelerated corrosion of the aluminum in the radiator and cause micro holes in the radiator that can leak according to Radiatorinfo.com.
