How to Change the Distributor Cap on a 1992 Camry

The Toyota Camry was introduced in 1983 in the United States. By introducing the Camry, Toyota began a rivalry with the Honda Accord that still continues to exist today. The 1992 Toyota Camry was equipped with a 2.2-liter, in-line 4-cylinder engine. There was an option to upgrade to a 3.0-liter V-6 for the 1992 Camry, as well. Removing or replacing the distributor cap on the 1992 Camry requires very little in terms of automotive knowledge or skills, and the task can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. Removal of the distributor cap is nearly identical for both engine options.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood of the Camry, and set the prop to hold the hood for the duration of this project. Locate the air intake tube that extends from the mass airflow sensor to the engine. Loosen the air intake hose clamps with a Phillips-head screwdriver at the mass airflow sensor, and at the engine. Remove the small vacuum tube from the rear portion of the air intake hose, by hand. Pull the intake hose away from the engine and the mass airflow sensor, and remove the intake hose from your working area in the engine compartment.

    2

Visually inspect the driver's side of the engine to locate the distributor cap -- the distributor cap has all of the spark plug wires protruding from its the top. Wrap masking tape around each spark plug wire, labeling them with tape marked from 1 through 4 or from 1 through 6, using a marker, in accordance with the markings on the top of the distributor cap. The distributor cap has individual markings for each spark plug wire, so that it can be positioned correctly. Remove each spark plug wire from the distributor cap.

    3

Remove the two mounting screws from the distributor cap with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the distributor cap straight up to remove it from the distributor assembly. Be sure not to cock or angle the cap during removal, so as not to jar the internal components beneath the cap. Remove the old distributor cap from the engine completely. Remove the small rubber gasket from the distributor housing, if it falls loose from the distributor.

    4

Installation of the distributor is the exact opposite of removal: Install the rubber gasket prior to reinstalling the distributor cap. Make sure you align the distributor up with the aligning tabs, so that the cap sits in the same position. Tighten the Phillips mounting screws on the distributor cap so they are snug, as no torque is needed. Reinstall the spark plug wires onto the distributor cap, in accordance with the numbers on top of the cap. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly and snug the mounting bolts. Don't forget to reinsert the small vacuum tube and the back of the intake hose.
