How to Remove the Fan Clutch in a 2003 Suburban

The fan mounted on the front of the engine in a 2003 Suburban turns using the rotational power of the engine. This fan is mounted to a clutch that keeps the fan spinning at a certain rate at all times. When the clutch goes out, the fan will still spin, but it won't cool as effectively as it could. Replacing the fan clutch requires a special tool set, but it can be done in under 15 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Pop the hood. Unbolt the upper fan shroud from the top of the radiator support using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift it up and out of the way from the engine.

    2

Set the fan clutch removal tool onto two of the nuts that hold the fan clutch to the engine pulley. Position the fan clutch tool so that it holds the two nuts still so you can use a wrench on the hex nut holding the fan clutch in place.

    3

Put the fan clutch wrench onto the hex head nut holding the fan clutch in place while holding the fan clutch removal tool in the other hand. Turn the two tools against each other so the fan clutch wrench turns counterclockwise, until the fan clutch spins off of the pulley. Lift the fan clutch out of the engine compartment.
