The heater core is responsible for providing heat to the interior of the car, and is locate on the firewall, underneath the dashboard on an '88 Chevrolet. It does its job by taking coolant from the radiator and circulating it in the system, dispelling the heat into the interior. The lines running to the heater core are rubber, and can crack over time. Removing them for replacement doesn't take a lot of time, and can be done at home.

Instructions

    1

Allow the vehicle to cool for several hours prior to working on the heater core so you don't risk burning yourself. Place the drain pan underneath the heater lines on the firewall.

    2

Remove the hose clamps on the ends of the heater core lines on the firewall using either the pliers or flathead screwdriver depending on what kind of hose clamp is on the line. Then pull off the hoses and allow them to drain into the pan.

    3

Follow the hoses to where they meet up with the engine. Remove the hose clamps with the pliers or the flathead screwdriver, then pull both of them off of the core support.
