How to Lube a Cam Lobe

It is important to lubricate the lobe of the camshaft, or any other engine parts for that matter, while rebuilding an engine prior to starting the engine because it takes a few seconds for oil to be drawn up from the oil pan by the oil pump and circulated throughout the engine. Following the proper steps to lubricate the cam lobe prior to the installation of the lifter and initial engine start-up will help prevent camshaft and lifter damage while ensuring countless hours of dependable cam and lifter operation in the future.

Instructions

    1

Unscrew the cap of a tube of camshaft and lifter lubricant if the vehicle is equipped with a non-roller cam, or a 1-quart container of motor oil if the vehicle is equipped with a roller cam.

    2

Apply a liberal amount of the camshaft and lifter lubricant to the cam lobe and the surface of the lifter contacting the cam lobe on vehicles equipped with a non-roller cam. If the vehicle is equipped with a roller cam, coat the surface of the cam lobe and lifter with high-quality non-synthetic motor oil instead.

    3

Repeat for all cam lobes and lifters

    4

Screw the cap back onto the tube of camshaft and lifter lubricant or the container of motor oil and save for future use.
