How to Change a Thermostat in a 1995 Buick Century

If your 1995 Buick Century has been well-maintained over the years it is likely still providing you with solid, reliable transportation. However, if you've neglected to maintain the cooling system like many people do, it's only a matter of time until your engine overheats due to a failed thermostat. When this happens it can mean the end of the road for your Century. You can avoid this by replacing that worn out thermostat with a new one.

Instructions

    1

Remove the top radiator hose from the thermostat intake tube by loosening the retention clip that holds the hose to the tube. Slide the clip back and pull the hose loose from the tube. Hold the tube up to drain the radiator fluid back into the radiator. Push the hose off to the side for easier access to the thermostat intake tube.

    2

Remove the 10-mm bolts that hold the thermostat intake tube onto the intake manifold of the Buick Century. Inspect the bottom of the intake tube for any pieces of thermostat gasket. Remove any pieces with a razor blade. Remove any thermostat gasket left on the top of the intake manifold with a razor blade as well.

    3

Remove the old thermostat from the intake manifold and replace it with the new one. Do not submerge in radiator fluid the end marked as the top.

    4

Place a small bead of RTV gasket maker on the bottom of the thermostat intake tube and allow it to dry for 15 minutes before bolting the tube back onto the intake manifold of the Century.

    5

Reattach the radiator hose using the retention clip. For a more secure fit, replace the clip with a cam-style band clamp.
