Cooling Fan Removal on a 2001 Dodge Truck

On a 2001 Dodge truck, the engine is cooled by a cooling fan mounted onto the drive belt pulley on the front of the engine. This fan spins in harmony with the engine, providing cool air to the radiator. When replacing certain front-engine accessories or engine-bay components, the engine fan has to come off for access. This process should take about 30 minutes to do.

Instructions

    1

Pop the hood. Unbolt the brackets connecting the fan shroud to the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Locate the electrical connector on the bottom of the lower fan-shroud bracket. Unplug the harness using your hands, then unbolt the lower bracket using the ratchet.

    2

Locate the fan blade nut holding the fan on the engine pulley. This nut is right-hand-threaded, meaning that you have to turn it to the right to loosen the nut. Place the long screwdriver between two of the bolts on the engine pulley and use the screwdriver to hold the pulley still. Loosen the fan blade nut using the 36 mm fan wrench.

    3

Remove the fan-blade nut completely from the engine. Pull the fan shroud and the engine fan out of the engine bay as one unit.
