Ford equipped the 2000 model-year Taurus wagon with a rear-liftgate window. To open the cargo area of the wagon, the back window lifts up and is supported by pneumatic cylinders which hold the window in the open position. Damage to the window glass, such as cracks, broken glass or excessive scratching of the glass surface, necessitate replacement of the liftgate window. With the aid of a helper, replace the window using common tools and basic mechanical skills.
Instructions
- 1
Lift the rear wiper's pivot arm off the glass. Pull out the latch lever at the base of the arm, then lower the arm toward the glass to relieve spring tension. Remove the pivot arm.
2Remove the nut cover at the pivot arm mount. Remove the wiper motor's outer nut with a wrench. Remove the wiper motor's outer cover.
3Open the liftgate. Grasp the wiper motor's inside-trim cover. Pull the cover straight out.
4Grasp and squeeze the lock tab on the motor's electrical connector. Pull the connector apart. Cut the zip-tie around the motor with diagonal pliers. Remove the retaining nut with a wrench. Remove the wiper motor.
5Grasp and squeeze the lock tab on the rear-window defogger's electrical connectors. Pull the connectors apart.
6Employ your helper to support the liftgate. Remove the clips from each liftgate-support cylinder, then slide the pins out of the cylinder mounts. Remove the support cylinders from the liftgate.
7Remove the liftgate-mount nuts--one on each hinge--with a Torx wrench. Remove the liftgate glass.
8Transfer rubber grommets and guide components from the old glass to the new glass. Remove the support cylinder's mount brackets from the old glass with a wrench. Install the brackets on the new glass.
9Reverse the disassembly procedure to reassemble the liftgate. Tighten the liftgate-mount nuts to 27 lb-in with a torque wrench. Tighten the wiper motor's retaining nut to 48 lb-in. Tighten the wiper motor's outer nut to 13 lb-ft.
