Your windshield on your 1947 Dodge truck does more than keep out the wind. Although your truck has not changed, the new glass used in windshields has gone through many advances. All windshields now use safety glass. The glass itself is much stronger than the original glass in your truck. Follow these instructions to install a new windshield should yours crack or break.
Instructions
- Inspect the windshield frame. The mounting area where the windshield goes must be free of dents, cuts and corrosion. The new windshield will not bond correctly to the truck otherwise. If there is body damage to this area, get it fixed.
- Sand around the windshield frame with 200-grit sandpaper. This is will make a good contact for the windshield adhesive. Apply the windshield adhesive primer to the mounting surface. (Check the adhesive manufacturer's instructions for type.) Allow the primer to dry at least 10 minutes. Caulk windshield adhesive to the entire mounting surface using your caulk gun.
- Prep the new windshield. Take your 200-grit sandpaper and sand the inside edge of the new windshield. This will make a good contact for the windshield adhesive. Apply the primer to the sanded area. Allow at least 10 minutes to dry. Caulk adhesive around the the primed area.
- Align the windshield to the top and bottom of the frame. Press the windshield firmly and evenly into place.
- Insert the rubber trim. After the adhesive has dried (refer to the manufacturer's directions), the rubber trim goes around the windshield. Use the heel of your palm to insert the trim.
