Nakivo Backup & Replication v7 adds Hyper-V support

Nakivo Backup & Replication added Microsoft Hyper-V support in version 7, along with a bulk delete option and the ability to skip swap files and partitions to speed backups.

Nakivo Inc., which only protects virtual machines (VMs), also added support for VMware vSphere 6.5 and Microsoft Active Directory, along with Hyper-V 2016 and 2012 (R2).

Hyper-V backup and replication

Nakivo Backup & Replication v7 provides image-based, application-aware and forever-incremental backup for Hyper-V. Only changes to the backup repository are backed up after the initial full backup. All of those backups are automatically compressed and deduplicated across the entire backup repository. After Hyper-V backups are created, an organization can send backup copies off site, as well as to the Amazon Web Services and Azure clouds.

Version 7 also features Hyper-V replication, which provides image-based, application-aware and forever-incremental replicas. The product can create and maintain identical copies of Hyper-V VMs on a target server. The VM replicas can be powered on at any time for near-instant recovery, according to Nakivo.

George Crump, founder of analyst firm Storage Switzerland LLC, said the need for Hyper-V backup will grow as its adoption rate increases.

"That's going to really help [Nakivo] as they go to market," Crump said.

Enhancements include vSphere backup, data protection management

Nakivo Backup & Replication v7 can back up, replicate and recover VMware vSphere 6.5 VMs. The product supports vSphere 6.5 features, including new VM attributes and encrypted VMs.

Backup & Replication v7 automatically skips the swap file in VMware and Hyper-V VMs, which speeds data transfer and saves storage space in a backup repository, according to the vendor.

The product's Activities tab aims to improve management of backups and simplify monitoring of data protection. The tab displays activities such as running jobs, file and object recovery sessions, and repository maintenance. It can stop current activities and restart finished ones.

Nakivo Backup & Replication v7 also allows customers to filter out old backups that are no longer needed and delete them in a single click.

Licensing for VMware and Hyper-V is socket-based, and it can be used freely for both. Licenses are required only for the backup and source side of replication.

Further on up the road

Nakivo targets the SMB market, but is trying to expand its enterprise reach.

"We plan to keep adding features SMBs want, but we already have enterprise features cooking," said Sergei Serdyuk, Nakivo's director of product management.
