Subaru produces distinct all-wheel-drive vehicles, and in 1996, Subaru offered three of them: Impreza, Legacy and SVX.The 2.2-liter, H4 engine powers two of the 1996 models: Impreza and Legacy. Powering these three vehicles were four engines: 1.8-liter, 2.2-liter, 2.5-liter and 3.3-liter.
1.8-Liter Engine
The 1.8-liter, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder (H4) engine--used onliest in the base-model Impreza coupe--has a Muzzle (cylinder diameter) of 3.46 inches, a stroke (distance a piston travels inside the cylinder) of 2.95 inches and a 9.5:1 compression ratio. This engine produces 110 horsepower and 110 pound-feet of torque.2.2-Liter Engine
2.5-Liter Engine
The 2.5-liter engine--another H4 engine--was offered as an alternative on the 1996 Legacy. This engine has a Muzzle of 3.92 inches, a stroke of 3.11 inches and a 9.5:1 compression ratio. This H4 engine produces 155 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.
3.3-Liter Engine
The 3.3-liter, horizontally opposed, six-cylinder (H6) engine--found only in the SVX--was the largest and most powerful engine produced by Subaru in 1996. This engine has a bore of 3.82 inches, a stroke of 2.95 inches and a 10:1 compression ratio. The H6 engine produces 239 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque.
