Five SEO Trends in 2014 You Need to Know

Search Engine Optimization Changed Quite a Bit in 2014

While 2014 saw some big changes for the wonderful world of search engine optimization, some of the bigger SEO trends this year are the same ones that have happened before. This is what can be so frustrating for people - knowing what still works and what is considered bad practice. Things change so quickly that it can be hard to keep up with everything and still run your day to day business.

SEO Trends in 2014

To help you stay on top of everything, the list of five different search engine optimization trends will help you considerably by giving you an idea of what's coming up in the world of SEO. Being one step ahead of everyone else is one of the keys to success in the Information Age.

  • Content is Still King - This shouldn't be a surprise, but it had to be included. Even ecommerce websites know that content is a must. And unlike just a few years ago, quality content is the only way to go. Spun articles and hastily written gibberish continued to be less useful in 2014.
  • Authority Trumps Amateur - Having an exact match domain isn't as important as it once was - unless that EMD is also a strong brand. Building authority is not easy, but it's the only consistent way to make it to the top of the SERPs and stay there for your keywords.
  • Quality Trumps Quantity - Along with the last point, quality still trumps quantity - in most cases. Some new black hat techniques were able to be used for a little while, but as always they stopped working eventually. This is usually when you see the ideas sold in ebook form on forum markets.
  • Low Quality Links Devalued - Another trend that is likely to continue is the devaluing of "spam" or low quality links. With Penguin 2.0, Google really put their foot down and continued their work to combat web spam this year. This is very likely to continue in the years ahead.
  • Mobile Search on the Rise - In 2014, local search via mobile devices continued to increase. This means that having a responsive mobile web design that looks good on any device is more important than ever before. This is another trend that is likely to continue in the months and years ahead.

When it comes to SEO in 2014, many people were unable to keep up with all the changes and saw their rankings in the organic search results suffer. While knowing what 2014 holds for the industry is impossible, by knowing what happened this year, you can begin to paint a picture of what's likely to happen next. If there's any trends we missed, leave a comment below and let us know.
