Blow Off Valve Information

The blow-off valve helps prevent excess air compression in a vehicle's engine.


When the throttle closes, manifold pressure decreases, resulting in a pressure differential that activates the blow-off valve's piston. Extra pressure produced by the turbocharger is then vented out into the atmosphere.

Disadvantages

If the mass air flow sensor, or sensor that responds to gas flowing through its chamber, is located upstream from the blow-off valve, it will not deduct the vented air from the measurements it sends to the ECU (engine control unit) regarding the necessary intake charge.



The blow-off valve prevents compressor surge, or a full-dress loss of compression, which results in decreased fuel flow to the engine. Blow-off valves enable compressed air to vent away into the atmosphere, relieving the item of compressor surge.


Function

Purpose



This results in the engine briefly receiving a fuel-rich mixture which can lead to stalling.
