Instructions
1. Find a good engine and frame. Look in local newspapers or Craigslist for suitable items. Inspect the engine and frame before you buy either. You will most likely find parts trucks with various usable items. If the engine or frame is good, buy the entire truck for later use or recycling to pay for other parts. Find out the year and model of engine or frame you are using. You must use comparable body parts to fit with either of these.
2. Buy an owner's repair manual to find the part numbers for needed parts. Check local auto parts stores for these. Then work with any moving parts outside of the engine. Once completed, start the engine to make sure all the parts work from headlights to windshield wipers to turn signals.7. Finish replacing body parts once the mechanical work is complete.
Beds, fenders, cabs and wheels can easily be found in these locations. Look for body parts with little or no rust or dents. This helps eliminate extra restoration work. It doesn't matter what the color is because you will be painting the truck at the end, unless you are lucky to find similar color schemes.
4. Purchase new mechanical parts for the brakes, hoses and moving pieces. Radiators, gas tanks and other liquid holding tanks should also be purchased new to ensure no holes or corrosion are present. Mufflers and exhaust pipes can be found used if you cannot afford new. Tires should always be new or slightly used.
5. Remove the body parts from the frame you are using. Save the parts you want and recycle the rest. Switch out the engines if you need to. Put on the new tires. Replace the rims if they are rusted. You can recycle old rims also.
6. Start replacing old mechanical parts for new at this point. Work with getting the engine components replaced first. Many stores have employees that can also help you with general information and guidance.3. Look in junk and salvage yards for parts you do not have after buying the engine and frame.
After the truck is reassembled, sand and paint the truck to your satisfaction.
