The Volkswagon SP2

VOLKSWAGON SP2

In Brazil the subsidiary of Volkswagon who ran things differently than the Wolfsburg plant decided to build a project car. This is the SP2 sports car. The idea was that the only sports car by Volkswagaon at the time was the Ghia and its was declining quickly.

The decline of the Ghia sparked CEO Rudolf Leiding to start what was referred to as Project X in 1969. The car came to life in 1971 at a auto fair and then in 1972 it hit the streets with a bang. The SP2 used the Variant frame and the same air cooled engine. The SP2 beefed up to 1700cc and a sporty interior.

The engine was listed at 75 HP, sort of funny to today's standards. It was rated at a top speed of 100 mph. The car had a lot of interest but never developed into a true sports car by power rating. The vehicle was on the road until 1976 when the new Puma arrived with a fiberglass body and more horsepower and killed off the sales for the SP2.

The SP3 was suppose to tackle this power issue by implementing the Passat TS motor but the car never was produced. What might have been for VW with a mini Super Car.....

The SP2 is collected these days for its sporty appeal, there is just something about this little car that makes you say hhhmmm I could do something with that car.
