Fuente Hemingway Signature
The Fuente family started making the
Perfecto cigar as far back as the 1920's when Arturo himself was the maker of this exquisite brand. Carlos remembers his Grandfather and friends smoking this particular cigar. Carlos decided to bring this back into the line in 1983.Limited to a hand full of rollers, the Perfecto is a cigar that only master rollers can produce. Fuente has now been making cigars for 102 years and produces over 30 million cigars a year.
There are many sizes available in the Fuente Hemingway Signature series. Today I chose the 6 x 47 Gran Corona Perfecto cigar. Considered to be the closest sample from the original Cuban Tobacco of early years.
This classic cigar is produced in the Dominican Republic and is constructed with a silky Cameroon Wrapper and Fuentes Dominican Filler and Binder. The first glance of the cigar tells you that the it is well produced. The wrapper has a healthy sheen but not too oily.
The cap and end are rolled perfectly. The cigar is light to the feel but upon touching there are no soft spots or imperfections. The band is wrapped is a classic Gran Reserva Red, Gold and White but has the Black and Gold band at the bottom.
The Perfecto with its pointed end will need a little love getting to burn evenly but it's a small price to pay for this classic taste.
First I noticed a classic cedar aroma coupled with a Cherry Wood flavor. The draw is smooth and the smoke is light. I would put this in the Medium cigar class.
A quarter way through the Hemingway the draw is still nice and the burn has evened out producing a medium gray smoke. The flavors have now gone into a light spicy Nutmeg with a sweet undertone.
You can see from picture that the ash has a tight
roll to it keeping along with the shape of the cigar and the color is light.
Midway through this Signature Hemingway a rich oak leathery flavor is now prominent. I haven't had to re-light this beautifully crafted cigar which is good do to that temperamental filler. (Use Cedar to re-light). There is still a hint of dark chocolate present and a thick deep gray smoke fills the air.
The finish of this cigar has a spicy earth punch. The aroma is now a smoked oak in the air. The burn is perfect yet a little hot towards the end. All in all I can almost see Arturo sitting at a cafe outside in Cuba with some buddies enjoying the flavor of these cigars. I think Carlos has done a wonderful job at re-producing that Cuban specialty cigar from the old days!
