Instructions for How to Winterize a Yamaha FZS Waverunner

The Yamaha FZS Waverunner is a water jet propelled watercraft capable of superior acceleration and top speed in comparison to similar craft. This is largely due to the huge 1.8-liter, four-stroke, supercharged and intercooled engine capable of producing 235 horsepower at 7,500 rpm. Alas, the summer gone, its time to protect this investment. Proper winterizing will ensure that your investment will show no effects of storage or suffer any ill effects of freezing due to the fact that it has a sealed cooling system.

Instructions

    1

Remove the seat and tip the Waverunner so it is slightly bow high. Remove the bilge plug so the water can drain out. Open the coolant filler cap and insert the antifreeze tester and fill the tube. Check how many balls are floating and cross-reference the number with the scale on the side of the tester. If there is none in the system or a very low amount, indicating a high freezing temperature, drain the system to add antifreeze. Add a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.

    2

Start the engine and let it run for 10 seconds and shut it off. This is to remove all remaining water from the propulsion system and circulate the antifreeze. Apply some detergent to a brush and, with a little water, scrub the inside of the hull thoroughly. Rinse the inside of the hull until all traces of detergent are removed.

    3

Remove the gas cap and pour in the fuel stabilizer. This will help keep the fuel fresh through the winter months. Replace the cap.

    4

Loosen the clamps on the air cleaner using the screwdriver then remove the air cleaner. Hold the oil fogger in front of the carburetor and start the engine. Spray the fogger into the carburetor until the engine stalls. Do not run the engine more than 10 seconds at a time or damage could occur from overheating. Turn off the key. Install the air cleaner.

    5

Remove the spark plugs using the spark plug socket and ratchet. Spray a good amount of oil mist into each spark plug hole. Bump the engine over a small amount with the key and spray the cylinder again. Install the spark plugs hand tight only.

    6

Spray a light film of spray lubricant over the entire surface of the engine and all exposed metal parts, particularly the throttle cables. Disconnect the battery, negative cable first, followed by the positive.

    7

Pat dry the inside hull with a towel. Remove the battery and lay it on a shelf or somewhere convenient to apply a trickle charge occasionally to keep it charged. Wax the outside hull with a good wax. Place a towel or cloth in the jet exhaust to keep everything out during storage.
