How to Change the Wiper Motor on a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88

Replacing the windshield wiper motor on a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88 is a relatively simple project for a do-it-yourselfer. All the wiper linkages under the air intake are secured using pressed-in round, plastic bushings. Very often these bushings become worn and cause the linkage to separate. They can be purchased at any auto parts store; however, they are very difficult to replace without a special installation tool.

Instructions

    1

Turn the ignition switch on. Turn the wiper switch on; when the wiper arm is at the highest point on the window, turn the ignition switch off. The arm will remain in position. Lift the wiper arm and pry the lock tab outward at the base of the arm, using a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the arm off the drive shaft. Do the same for the opposite side.

    2

Turn the ignition switch on for a second to allow the wiper motor to park itself. Turn off the ignition switch. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench. Pull the wiper hoses off at the air intake cowl. Remove the air intake cowl, using a nut driver to remove the screws.

    3

Place the wiper arm separator tool between the wiper motor crank arm and the wiper arm rod and pop the rod off the crank arm. Remove the electrical plug from the motor by lifting the locking tab and pulling the plug out.

    4

Remove the three bolts securing the wiper motor using a socket and ratchet. Rotate the motor vertically and remove it from the car.

    5

Install the new wiper motor by holding the motor vertically and inserting the crank arm through the hole in the body. Rotate the motor down, align the holes and install the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 71 inch-pounds.

    6

Press the wiper arm onto the crank ball using the special installation tool. Install the air intake cowl. Push the windshield wiper hoses onto the nipples protruding through the cowl. Install the electrical plug in the wiper motor.

    7

Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a wrench. Turn the ignition switch on so the wiper motor will return to the park position if it hasnt already done so. Turn off the ignition switch.

    8

Install the wiper arms so the wiper is just slightly above its stop position on the cowl. Push them down onto the drive gear until you can push the lock tab into the lock position. Test the wipers to make sure they are installed correctly. If they move too far one way or the other, remove and reposition them as needed.
