How to Reset a Computer on a 2004 Nissan Maxima

The engine control module, or ECM, on a 2004 Nissan Maxima is the vehicles main computer responsible for controlling most of the vehicles components, including the engine and transmission. The ECM actively collects data from a number of sensors in the vehicle to determine whether the vehicle is functioning properly. When the ECM detects a problem with one or more of these systems, it stores a trouble code in its internal memory and illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp, or MIL. To reset the ECM, all current and past trouble codes must be cleared from its memory using an automotive scan tool.

Instructions

    1

Shut off the engine and apply the parking brake. Turn the ignition to the On position, but dont start the engine.

    2

Connect an automotive scan tool to the Maximas diagnostic data port. This port is located underneath the dashboard, to the left of the steering column.

    3

Power on the scan tool and navigate to the ECM menu. Select Codes, then select Clear All Current and Stored DTCs. Choose Yes when the tool asks if you are sure.

    4

Turn off the scan tool and disconnect it from the vehicle. The ECM now is reset.
