How to Repair a Stop Lamp Switch in a 2002 Ford F-150

The 2002 Ford F-150 has three brake lights. Two mount on the side of the tailgate, and the third is located at the top-rear of the passenger compartment roof. All three brake lights draw their power from the brake light circuit, controlled by the stop lamp switch. The switch mounts directly in front of the brake pedal arm. Each time you step on the brakes, the pedal arm contacts the pressure-sensitive stop lamp switch, which closes the brake light circuit. If all three of your brake lights fail at one time, odds are the stop lamp switch is the cause of the failure.

Instructions

    1

Open the F-150's driver-side door. Adjust the driver seat as far back as possible to provide yourself with ample work space.

    2

Shine the flashlight up under the dashboard, along the brake pedal arm, to locate the stop lamp switch. Unplug the wiring pigtail from the body of the stop lamp switch.

    3

Unbolt the stop lamp switch from the mounting bracket, using a 13-mm box wrench. Bolt the new stop lamp switch in its place, using the wrench.

    4

Plug the wiring pigtail into the new stop lamp switch.

    5

Depress the brake pedal while a helper verifies that all three brake lights turn on. If you do not have a helper, back the F-150 up to a reflective surface and step on the brakes while looking in the rear-view mirror to ascertain if the lights are working properly.
