How to Remove the Water Pump Fan on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes equipped with a Mopar high flow water pump to push more coolant through the engine and into radiator. If the water pump becomes damaged or inoperable, the motor can overheat and cause major damage. The water pump is driven by the serpentine belt system of the motor. While replacing the water pump, you should also examine the thermostat and check the condition of the serpentine belt.

Instructions

    1

Place safety gloves on your hands. The gloves will help you get a better grip and protect them from the fan blades.

    2

Remove the fan shroud that covers the front of the engine. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the three screws that hold the shroud in place. The shroud may use a different style screw called a Torx head which is shaped like a star.

    3

Use your hand and disconnect the overflow tube from the radiator.

    4

Remove the overflow bottle from the engine bay. Set the bottle off to the side, and be careful to keep the bottle upright so that no coolant spills.

    5

Use the 7/16 inch socket to remove the fan clutch from the front of the engine block. There are four 7/16 inch bolts supporting the fan clutch.

    6

Loosen the tensioner pulley with a 1/2 inch socket. Slide the pulley toward the center of the vehicle and remove the serpentine pulley.

    7

Remove the four bolts that secure the water pump housing to the engine block. The four bolts are all 1/2 inch bolts. Some aftermarket water pumps use a 9/16 inch hex head bolts for the installation.

    8

Install a new thermostat while the water pump is off of the Jeep. Install the new water pump, serpentine belt, and fan clutch. Check all the bolts and make sure the installation process was done in the reverse order of the removal.
