How to Put a Radio in a 1999 Mazda Protege

Mazda released the Protg to the U.S. marketplace in 1990 and it went through its first redesign in 1994. The second -- and final -- redesign for the Protg came in 1999. The final redesign gave Mazda's entry-level sedan a more stylish and modern exterior. The 1999 Protg had an optional four-speaker AM-FM CD-player and cassette player available. As with most Mazdas of its era, the Protg's radio was simple to replace, given you had the special tool needed.

Instructions

    1

Look on the right and left sides of the radio unit, and find the thin pieces of plastic on each end of the radio. Use the blade of a small flat-head screwdriver to pry both trim pieces off the radio unit -- notice there are two small, circular holes under each trim piece.

    2

Insert the straight end of each Mazda radio removal tool -- the U-shaped tool -- about an inch into the holes.

    3

Pull outward on the curved part of both Mazda radio removal tools to disengage the radio's locking tabs -- you cannot see these tabs, so you must go by feel. While holding the outward pressure, pull the tools toward the rear of the radio to slide the radio from the dash until the radio's locking tabs clear the dashboard. You may need to repeat Steps 2 and 3 a few times, as the tools can sometimes slip out.

    4

Remove the tools once the locking tabs are clear of the dashboard. Grab the radio, and pull it from the chassis in the dashboard until you can access the wires on the rear of the radio.

    5

Press and hold the locking button on each wiring harness on the rear of the radio, and pull each harness from the radio with a slight wiggling motion. Pull the antenna lead -- the black cable -- from the rear of the radio. Remove the radio from its chassis.

    6

Connect the two wiring harnesses to their respective receptacles on the rear of the radio -- the harnesses are two different sizes. Plug the antenna lead into its receptacle on the radio. Slide the radio into its chassis in the dashboard until the radio's locking tabs click into place.
