Ford offered the Contour from 1995 to 2000 and eventually replaced the mid-sized sedan with the Fusion in 2005. Offered with a 2.5-Liter Duratec V-6, the 2000 Contour relied on a small, transaxle-mounted starter motor for the initial torque to start the engine. Common causes of starter malfunction in the Contour included electrical shorts and mechanic failure that prevented the Bendix gear from ejecting to turn the Duratec's flywheel. If you turn the key and hear a whirring noise but the Contour doesn't start, or nothing happens but you have electrical power, odds are the starter has failed.
