Immediately shut off the engine when the vehicle starts overheating. Steam escaping from underneath the hood, a drop in oil pressure, a drop in the water level and general differences in the way the vehicle is driving can all be signs that your vehicle is overheating.
2Pop the hood of the vehicle to allow the hot air to escape faster. This will cool the engine down faster helping to prevent further damage. After the engine is cooled, add water to the water reservoir and change the coolant.
3Tow the vehicle home or to a mechanic, if possible. Resisting the urge to drive the vehicle after it has cooled down will prevent further damage and could save money in the long run.
4Fix the problem as soon as possible. Understanding what caused the engine to overheat in the first place is a good place to start. Overheating is most often caused by a stuck thermostat, clogged radiator, hole in the radiator hose or a faulty cooling fan.
