Fuel Injector Issues

Fuel Injector Issues

As a replacement to carburetors, some cars have constant fuel injection (CFI) systems--with one fuel injector that delivers fuel to all of an engine's cylinders--and others have electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems, which have a separate injector for each cylinder. Fuel injectors have existed since the 1950s and electronic fuel injectors were introduced in the 1980s. The purpose of fuel injectors is to reduce emissions and improve gas mileage for good vehicle performance. Fuel injectors enable vehicles to start easily when the ignition is turned on; however, problems may occur at times.

Terrible Fuel Economy

If a fuel injector does not open and close as expected, it will either send too much or an insufficient amount of fuel to the engine. This will result in poor fuel economy and poor vehicle performance.

Abnormal Acceleration

Vehicles with an electronic fuel injection system have a quicker acceleration response time than vehicles with a constant fuel injection system. This quick response time of EFIs is due to the ability of electronic fuel injectors to deliver fuel to an engine without waiting for a complete revolution of an engine. A faulty fuel injector can interfere with acceleration by means loss of power.

Poor Idling

Faulty fuel injectors will cause a vehicle to run well when cold, but run poorly when warm. When fuel injectors are not working properly, a vehicle may also have ease of starting when cold and difficulty starting when warm. Some vehicles may require that fuel injectors are cleaned; however, after regular wear and tear, replacement of fuel injectors may be the solution.

Fuel Injector Seals Leak

If fuel leaks from fuel injector seals or a fuel injector, a fire can occur in a vehicle's engine. Fuel injector leakage could also result in the smell of fuel inside a vehicle. If leaks are detected, they must be repaired immediately.

Maintenance

As part of routine maintenance, fuel injectors should be replaced between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. Read the maintenance guide for your vehicle. Use good fuel in your vehicle, because it will make your injectors last longer and keep your car running well. According to The Parts Bin, faulty fuel injectors that are not replaced may damage fuel distributors, check valves, fuel pump and fuel regulator.
