How to Take the Battery Out of a 1989 Blazer

Chevrolet introduced the S10 Blazer in the 1983 model year. The 1989 Blazer came fitted with a 125-horsepower, 2.8-liter V-6 engine. The battery in the Blazer provides the electricity needed to start the truck. Once the engine is running, the alternator provides the electricity needed to run the SUV and recharge the battery. As the battery ages, the charge slowly lowers, and eventually gets so low, you must simply replace it. The battery on the 1989 Blazer is in plain sight, making for an easy removal procedure.

Instructions

    1

Open the Blazer's hood and locate the battery on the front, driver's side of the engine compartment.

    2

Remove the negative battery cable -- the black one -- by loosening the bolt, using a ratchet and socket, and pulling the cable away from the battery.

    3

Loosen the bolt securing the positive battery cable -- the red one -- on the battery, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the positive cable away from the battery.

    4

Remove the bolt securing the battery clamp -- the plastic piece holding the base of the battery to the battery tray -- using a ratchet and socket. Remove the battery clamp.

    5

Grab the sides of the battery and pull it from the battery tray. Use caution, as the battery is fairly heavy.

    6

Grab the new battery and set it on the battery tray with the terminals facing toward the passenger's side of the Blazer. Set the battery clamp on the tray and position it so that it's contacting the small, plastic tab protruding from the base of the battery. Tighten the battery clamp bolt with a ratchet and socket.

    7

Install the positive cable on the battery terminal with the "+" sign above it. Tighten the cable-to-battery retaining bolt to 11 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    8

Set the negative battery cable on the terminal with a "-" sign above it. Tighten the cable-to-battery retaining bolt to 11 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket.

    9

    Close the Blazer's hood.
