How to Repair the Inner Tie Rod on a 1994 Ranger

Ford introduced the Ranger pickup in 1983. The 1994 Ranger is a third-generation model which was produced from 1993 to 2000. The 1994 Ranger was powered by a 2.3-liter in-line four-cylinder, or a 3.0- or 4.0-liter V-6 engine with multipoint fuel injection. The Ranger uses a steering system comprised of a drag link that attaches to the pitman arm and runs to the right wheel. A tie rod with inner and outer ends attaches to the drag link and left wheel. The inner tie rod is also called a steering arm.

Instructions

    1

Park the Ranger on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake. Loosen the lug nuts on the left wheel. Raise the front of the Ranger with a jack and support with jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and wheel.

    2

Loosen the nuts on the tie rod adjusting sleeve with a ratchet and socket. Straighten the cotter pin on the inner tie rod end and remove it with a pair of pliers. Remove the castle nut with a ratchet and socket. Insert a pickle fork tie rod removal tool between the drag link and tie rod end. Strike the end of the tool with a hammer to pop out the tie rod end.

    3

Measure the distance from the center of the tie rod end to the adjusting sleeve. Write this measurement down so you can install the new end to the same length. Unscrew the end from the sleeve and remove it.

    4

Spray the area where the end of fits with carburetor cleaner and wipe off with a shop rag. Make sure the tapered seat in the drag link is clean.

    5

Screw a new end into the sleeve until you reach measurement you wrote down earlier. Tighten the nuts on the adjusting sleeve with a torque wrench and socket to between 30 and 42 foot-pounds.

    6

Tighten the castle nut on the tie rod end to between 50 and 75 foot-pounds. Make sure you have opposing notches in the castle nut lined up with the hole in the end. Install and bend a new cotter pin.

    7

Mount the wheel and install the lug nuts and tight. Raise the front of the Ranger, remove the jack stands and lower it to the ground. Torque the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds. Take the Ranger to a shop and have a wheel alignment done.
