How to Change a 2001 Ford Ranger Oxygen Sensor

The 2001 Ford Ranger uses just one oxygen sensor in front of the first catalytic converter. The oxygen sensor is just that --- it senses the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system and sends this signal to the engine management computer. The computer takes this input information and calculates the appropriate action to maintain a 14.5-to-1 mixture of air to fuel. To maintain this ratio, the computer will either adjust the ignition timing or the fuel injector duty cycle.

Instructions

    1

Raise the front of the truck using the floor jack. Place the jack stands under the frame just behind the front wheels and lower the truck so it rests on the stands.

    2

Disconnect the electrical pig tail on the oxygen sensor. It is only about 2 feet long and can be seen rising toward the rear of the engine. Pull the connectors apart. Remove the oxygen sensor using the 7/8-inch wrench. Turn the sensor counterclockwise to remove.

    3

Pull the plastic cap off the new sensor and thread it in by hand clockwise as far as possible. Use the wrench and turn the sensor until it stops. Turn it another 30 degrees.

    4

Connect the electrical harness. Lift the truck and remove the jack stands, then lower the truck.
