The engine on a 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle is mounted in the rear of the car, making it difficult to keep cool. One way the vehicle does keep it cool is by using a blower fan, which is mounted next to the engine. If this fan or the fan motor fails, then the engine won't be able to cool properly, and it could overheat. To prevent this from happening, you should remove the blower fan in order to detect if the blower fan or the fan motor are malfunctioning.

Open the rear hood and unbolt it from the rest of the body, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift the hood off the hinges and place it to the side.
2Let the engine cool prior to proceeding, so that you don't burn yourself. Disconnect the heater hoses from the generator strap, using the flat-head screwdriver. Unscrew the fan housing from the vehicle, using the Phillips-head screwdriver.
3Loosen the generator bolts, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Tilt the generator towards the middle of the engine and pull the belt off the pulley. Unscrew the thermostat securing screw from the engine, using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the thermostat out of the housing.
4Remove the generator and the fan as one unit, using both hands. Remove the fan retaining nut on the fan, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then pull the fan off the generator.
