How to Fix the 2002 Ford Taurus Rear Door Window Motor

The 2002 Ford Taurus LX submodels came with two distinct styles of window regulators, depending on the plant where they were produced: one is a scissors-style regulator and the other a cable-and-post style regulator. The difference in the replacement of the window motor occurs with the scissors-style regulator. This regulator has a large, heavy spring that assists the motor in raising the window. For its removal, a block of wood must be placed inside the door to prevent the regulator from snapping shut when the motor is removed. This spring action causes the regulator to act like a pair of scissors, and can lop off the tips of your fingers very easily.

Instructions

    1

Remove all the Phillips screws from both sides and the bottom of the door panel. Insert a common screwdriver between the door panel and the door, and pry out all the trim fasteners from both sides and the bottom of the door panel. Lift the door panel straight up to remove it. Move the panel away from the door to access the back of the panel; unplug the window switch.

    2

Peel the moisture shield back to expose the window motor. Unplug the window motor electrical harness. Block the window regulator upper window channel with a piece of wood so that it can't come down when the motor is removed -- this is not necessary if you have a cable system.

    3

Remove the window motor bolts and the motor. Install the window motor carefully, twisting the motor a few degrees up and down to engage the gears in the regulator with those on the motor. Install the bolts and tighten them firmly.

    4

Remove the block of wood. Plug the window motor into the harness. Place the moisture shield back in place. Hold the door panel close to the door and plug the window switch in the electrical connector. Align the trim fasteners with the corresponding holes in the door and press them in. Install all the Phillips screws.
