How to Remove the Headlight Lens on a 2001 BMW 325i

The 2001 BMW 325i, or E46, was equipped with an L6 2.5-liter engine. The 2001 325i was available as a sedan or a sport wagon. A removable headlamp lens is attached to the headlamp assembly on the 2001 325i. Removal of the lens is usually to replace the lens due to fogging or damage. Replacing the lens cover on the 2001 325i requires removal of some other body parts. The headlamp system on the 2001 325i uses two separate bulbs for the high- and low-beam lighting.

    Raise the hood on the BMW. Depress the turn signal assembly retainer by using a screwdriver through the small hole at the front end of the fender pinch rail. Pull the turn signal assembly horizontally forward and out of the car. Disconnect the turn -signal bulb and socket from the assembly by turning the socket counterclockwise. Tuck the bulb back near the fender out of your way, and place the turn signal assembly out of your work area.

    Pull the thin trim piece off of the headlamp assembly, using a screwdriver if needed. Gently pry the tabs on the top of the headlamp assembly, using a screwdriver. Pull the headlamp cover strip off of the lens. Separate all of the retainers at the top, bottom and inboard side of the headlamp lens, using a screwdriver if needed. Pull the lens free from the headlamp assembly by hand. Inspect the lens gasket for tears or cracks, and replace the gasket if necessary.

    Install the new lens onto the headlamp assembly, using the inboard radiator clip as your starting point. Gently press the new lens onto the headlamp assembly, until all of the clips lock the lens in place. Push the lens cover onto the top of the headlamp lens by hand. Install the headlamp assembly trim by hand.

    Install the turn signal bulb and socket back into the turn signal assembly. Hold the bulb socket and do not touch the bulb lens with your fingers. Turn the bulb socket clockwise to lock the bulb and socket into the housing. Insert the housing horizontally into the front of the 325i, until the housing clicks and locks into place.
