How to Change the Thermostat on a Camaro

Every Camaro has a thermostat that detects the temperature of the engine coolant in order to regulate the amount of coolant entering the engine from the radiator. The thermostat works on its own without any electrical connection, but will sometimes fail and need replacing. Thermostats are always located at the top of the engine and are a critical component for keeping your engine at optimal operating temperature.

Instructions

    1

Put on the safety glasses. Release the pressure in the cooling system by removing the radiator cap. Squeeze open the clamp securing the radiator hose to the thermostat housing with the pliers. Slide the clamp back and away from the housing.

    2

Place the drain on the ground directly under the thermostat location. Pull the radiator hose off of the housing and bend it, creating a kink in the radiator hose. Place the vice grips over the hose and lock them down to hold the kink in the radiator hose.

    3

Remove the two bolts that hold the housing to the engine with the socket and ratchet set. Pull the housing away from the engine and pull the thermostat away from the engine.

    4

Place the new thermostat into place and ensure it sits flat with a nice snug fit. Ensure the gasket sits evenly in the thermostat hole. Place the thermostat housing back over the thermostat and tighten the bolts back down with the socket and ratchet.

    5

Remove the vice grips and place the radiator hose back over the thermostat housing. Slide the clamp back down the radiator hose with the pliers and release it to secure to radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Start the engine with the radiator cap off and allow it to run for a few minutes to ensure all air is out of the system. Shut off the engine and replace any coolant lost during the process.
