World's Longest High-speed Rail Line in China

China opened the world's longest high-speed rail line at 9:00 AM today. The line is 2,298 kilometer long from Beijing to Guangzhou. It connects the capital with the economic hub in southern China. More than 150 pairs of high-speed trains will run on the new line every day.

The trains will initially run at a speed of 300 kilometers per hours between Beijing and Guangzhou. This means passengers will be transported from the capital to the southern commercial hub in just eight hours, compared with the 22 hours previously required. The line also makes stops in 35 major cities along the way, including provincial capitals Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Changsha.

China's high-speed rail network was established in 2007. The new line, which is part of the country's plan to
build a 16,000 kilometer high- speed rail network by 2015, will eventually connect to Hong Kong.
