How to Replace a Coil Pack in a 2001 Toyota Corolla

Toyota introduced the Corolla to the U.S. market during the 1968 model year. The original Corolla came with a 1.1-liter engine that produced only 60 horsepower. By 2001, the Corolla had improved significantly, as its 1.8-liter engine cranked out 125 horsepower. This four-cylinder engine used a distributor-less ignition system, and instead had four individual coil packs delivering spark to each spark plug. Toyota used this system because it delivers more efficient spark than a system using ignition wires. Replacing a coil pack on the 2001 Corolla requires removal of the upper engine cover.

Instructions

    1

Remove the plastic engine cover, by removing the two bolts and two nuts on the cover, using a ratchet and socket and pulling upward on the cover.

    2

Unplug the wiring harness from the top of the coil pack by pressing the locking button and pulling the harness from the coil pack.

    3

Remove the bolt securing the ignition coil to the top of the engine, using a ratchet and socket. Remove the coil, by pulling it upward with a slight twisting motion.

    4

Coat the inside of the new coil pack's rubber boot with dielectric grease. Set the new coil pack in the hole on the top of the engine and press downward until it clicks into place on the spark plug. Tighten the coil pack bolt to 5 to 6 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket.

    5

Plug the wiring harness into the top of the coil pack.

    6

Repeat steps 2 through 5 for any other coils needing replacement.

    7

Set the engine cover back on top of the engine and tighten the rear bolts, using a ratchet and socket.
