The Chrysler 440 cubic-inch V8 engine was produced from 1967 through 1983, and was the largest V8 made by the Chrysler Corporation. The 440 uses an umbrella-type valve stem seal to control the amount of oil entering the valve guides. These seals actually ride up and down with the valve. A high-performance Teflon seal -- also called a positive seal -- is available that attaches to the valve guide. It has a Teflon insert that fits over the valve stem. These seals are smaller in diameter and are generally used when high-performance dual valve springs are installed.
Instructions
- 1
Insert a valve into the cylinder head. Lay the head on a flat surface while holding the valve stem with your hand. Now you can let go of the valve stem and the valve will only slide down a little bit because it will rest against the flat surface.
2Place a thin film of motor oil on the valve stem.
3Place a thin film of motor on the Teflon insert in the center of the seal.
4Slide the installation tube -- it looks like a straw -- through the center of the seal.
5Slide the installation tube over the tip of the valve stem and slide the seal over the valve stem.
6Push the outside of the seal over the valve guide. It has a metal ring around it that will hold it on the guide.
7Repeat for all of the valves.
