How to Install Teflon Seals on 440 Heads

The Chrysler 440 cubic-inch V8 engine was produced from 1967 through 1983, and was the largest V8 made by the Chrysler Corporation. The 440 uses an umbrella-type valve stem seal to control the amount of oil entering the valve guides. These seals actually ride up and down with the valve. A high-performance Teflon seal -- also called a positive seal -- is available that attaches to the valve guide. It has a Teflon insert that fits over the valve stem. These seals are smaller in diameter and are generally used when high-performance dual valve springs are installed.

Instructions

    1

Insert a valve into the cylinder head. Lay the head on a flat surface while holding the valve stem with your hand. Now you can let go of the valve stem and the valve will only slide down a little bit because it will rest against the flat surface.

    2

Place a thin film of motor oil on the valve stem.

    3

Place a thin film of motor on the Teflon insert in the center of the seal.

    4

Slide the installation tube -- it looks like a straw -- through the center of the seal.

    5

Slide the installation tube over the tip of the valve stem and slide the seal over the valve stem.

    6

Push the outside of the seal over the valve guide. It has a metal ring around it that will hold it on the guide.

    7

Repeat for all of the valves.
