How to Change the Radio in a Mitsubishi Eclipse 2001

Mitsubishi began its presence in the U.S. in 1971 as the manufacturer of the Dodge Colt. The Mitsubishi nameplate first arrived in 1982, and the brand continued manufacturing run-of-the-mill vehicles through 1989. In 1990, Mitsubishi -- in another joint effort with Chrysler -- released the Eclipse, alongside the Plymouth Laser and Eagle Talon. In 1995, Mitsubishi completely redesigned the Eclipse, giving it a more shortened nose and a rounder body. In 2000, Mitsubishi redesigned the popular Eclipse once again, giving it a love-it-or-hate-it wedge design with exaggerated body lines. The 2002 Eclipse came standard with an AM-FM, CD-player stereo system. Replacing the 2002 Eclipse's radio is a straightforward and simple process.

Instructions

    1

Remove the two screws on the underside of the dash bezel -- the trim piece surrounding the radio and heater controls -- using a Phillips screwdriver. Pry the upper part of the dash bezel away from the dashboard, using a flat-head screwdriver to disengage the upper retaining clips.

    2

Pull the dash bezel away from the dash until you can access the wiring harness connecting to the rear of the hazard light button. Press the locking button on the wiring harness, then pull it away from the hazard switch. Remove the bezel from the dash and place it in a secure location.

    3

Remove the four screws securing the radio in its chassis in the dashboard. Pull the radio out of its chassis until you can access the wiring on the rear of the radio. Press the locking button on the radio's wiring harness, then pull the harness from the rear of the radio. Pull the antenna wire from the rear of the radio with a slight twisting motion. Slide the radio and pocket, if applicable, from the Eclipse.

    4

Remove the two screws securing each bracket to the radio, using a Phillips screwdriver. Transfer the brackets to the new radio, then tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    5

Connect the wiring harness to the receptacle on the rear of the radio -- listen for the harness to click into place. Press the plug on the end of the antenna wire into the antenna input on the rear of the radio.

    6

Slide the radio into the radio chassis in the dashboard, lining up the locator tab on the dash with the locator hole in the middle of each bracket. Tighten the four radio-retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    7

Plug the hazard switch wiring harness into the receptacle on the rear of the hazard switch. Line the metal clips on the top of the dash bezel up with the slots in the dashboard. Press the top of the dash bezel toward the dashboard to engage the retaining clips. Tighten the two screws on the underside of the dash bezel with a Phillips screwdriver.
