DIY Oil Return Line on an Eclipse

The do-it-yourself process of changing out a oil return line on a Mitsubishi Eclipse can be done with a few basic hand tools. The oil return line returns the oil from the turbo charger back to the oil pan or back to the oil filter housing. The main reason that a oil return line needs replacing is leakage around the oil line connector at the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Other reasons can include direct damage to the oil return line itself.

Instructions

    1

Park the Eclipse on a level surface and set the parking brake. Place the wheel chocks in front of both front wheels and behind both wheels. Open the hood and wait an hour or two for the engine to cool down.

    2

Jack the front end of the Eclipse off the ground and place the jack stands under the proper jacking points on both sides of the front end. Lower the Eclipse front end onto the jack stands and leave the jack in place.

    3

Locate the areas where the oil return line connects to the bottom of the turbo charger and the top side of the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Depending on the model and engine size of the Eclipse, the oil return line will either be connected to the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Place a drip pan under the general area of the turbo and the oil pan to catch any excess oil from the oil return line.

    4

Loosen and remove the 2-metric bolts from the oil line connector that connects to the turbo charger with a metric open-end wrench.

    5

Loosen and remove the 2-metric bolts from the oil line connector that connects to the side of the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Pull both ends of the oil return line away from the turbo and away from the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Pull the oil line out of the engine compartment and place it on the ground.

    6

Clean the oil return line connector surfaces around the turbo charger and the oil pan or the oil filter housing with a clean rag. Wipe the bottom of the connector base on both ends of the oil return line with a clean rag. Spread a small amount of red high-temperature silicone around the base of both oil return line connectors. Press a gasket over the silicone on each oil line connector base.

    7

Press the base of the oil return line to the oil line connector on the turbo charger. Screw the 2-metric bolts into the oil line base and into the connector of the turbo charger. Tighten the bolts down tight with the open end wrench.

    8

Press the base on the other end of the oil return line to the oil line connector on the side of the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Screw the 2-metric bolts into the oil line base and into the connector of the oil pan or the oil filter housing. Tighten the bolts down with the open-end wrench.

    9

Check the tightness of both threaded screw-on oil line connectors with a open-end wrench. The threaded line connectors connect to the threads on the base of both ends of the oil line.
