How to Install a 1995 F-150 Accelerator Cable

The 1995 Ford F-150 was available in 18 different sub-models. The 1995 F-150 was equipped with a 4.9-liter in-line or straight six-cylinder engine as the base engine. A 4.9-liter bi-fuel six-cylinder was available as an optional engine, along with a 5.0-liter V-8 and a 5.8-liter V-8. The accelerator cable on the 1995 F-150 connects the engine throttle assembly with the accelerator pedal in the truck. Over time, accelerator cables can break, stick or stretch. This can cause issues with engine performance, and replacement of the cable becomes the only option.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood on the F-150. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a ratchet and socket.

    2

Move to the driver's side of the F-150, and open the door. Situate yourself so you can access the top of the accelerator pedal shaft. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the pedal by pulling it upward out of the "U" shaped cradle in the shaft.

    3

Remove the rubber accelerator cable grommet using pliers. Remove the screw that attaches the cable to the dashboard instrument panel, if equipped.

    4

Move to the front of the truck. Remove the two screws that attach the splash cover to the throttle assembly using your ratchet and socket. Remove the splash cover to expose the throttle assembly. Remove the vertical screw that attaches the cable to the throttle bracket. Remove the accelerator cable from the ball socket on the throttle bracket using a flat-head screwdriver.

    5

Remove the oil level dipstick from the driver's side of the engine, and set it on the upper fender pinch rail temporarily. Remove the rubber grommet from the old cable inside the engine compartment. Use a pair of pliers to pull the grommet free from the cable. Remove the old accelerator cable from the engine compartment.

    6

Insert the new accelerator cable onto the ball of the throttle bracket. Push the cable head downward until it clicks and locks into place onto the throttle assembly. Install the vertical mounting screw onto the throttle bracket, and tighten it between 21 and 27 inch-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    7

Route the accelerator cable on the driver's side of the engine so it does not touch and is not hindered by any other engine components. Insert the accelerator pedal end of the cable into the firewall and dash panel slightly. Install the rubber grommet onto the new accelerator cable by hand. Move to the driver's side of the truck.

    8

Pull the accelerator cable through the dash panel using needle nose pliers to grab the cable. Remove the plastic accelerator pedal and shaft guard at this time, if equipped. Use your needle-nose pliers to grab the plastic guard and slide if off the cable completely. Do not remove this guard, if equipped, until the cable is situated directly near the accelerator pedal.

    9

Install the dash instrument panel screw, if equipped, and tighten it between 18 and 26 inch-pounds using a torque wrench and socket. Move to the front of the truck.

    10

Install the throttle assembly splash cover and tighten the mounting screws between 45 and 79 inch-pounds. Install the battery cable onto the battery, and tighten the cable snug with your ratchet and socket.

    11

Read the "Warnings" section before performing the initial tests on your new throttle cable. Start the engine to perform the initial idle test. Ensure that the truck idles properly. If the truck engine instantly revs or increases in rpm above 1,000, shut the key off immediately. Check your accelerator cable to make sure it is not snagged or blocked by anything. Repeat this test if needed. Proceed to Step 12 if this test's results are good.

    12

Push the accelerator pedal down completely, then release it completely. If the engine returns to idle from the wide open throttle or WOT position, then the throttle cable is set correctly. If the engine does not instantly decelerate or return back to idle when you let go of the pedal, turn the truck off immediately. Check your accelerator cable to make sure it is properly mounted and not touching any other part of the vehicle. Repeat this test if needed.
