The NP435 is a heavy-duty four-speed truck transmission that was optional factory equipment in full-size Ford and Dodge pickup trucks from the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Rock crawlers commonly swap this transmission into Jeeps and Broncos because of its strength and extra-low "granny" first gear. If you buy an NP435 from a junkyard, you may have to pull it out of a truck. This is easier if you remove the shifter first. Fortunately, shifter removal is easy with minimal tools.
Instructions
- 1
Set the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral. Turn the shifter knob counterclockwise to unscrew and remove it.
2Remove the screws in the shifter boot bezel, and slide the boot off the shifter. Slide the pipe over the shifter and let it rest on the dome-shaped metal piece at the top of the transmission.
3Clamp the locking pliers tightly on the steel pipe. Use the pliers as a handle to push down on the pipe and depress the metal dome. Turn the dome 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
4Lift the shifter straight up to remove it.
