How to Wire Gauges Through a Firewall in a 2009 GTI

If you wish to install new gauges on your 2009 Volkswagen GTI, you may need to wire the gauge through the firewall. Although this is not necessary for all gauges, certain gauges such as the tachometer, fuel gauge or even a boost gauge will need to be hooked up to the engine to function properly. Thankfully, there is a simple modification that you can perform to your GTI that will allow you to wire the gauges through the vehicle's firewall.

Instructions

    1

Pull the hood release lever to open your GTI's hood. Lift up the hood and secure it.

    2

Pull off the rubber trim at the edge of the engine compartment.

    3

Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the two clips holding the plastic rain gutter. Remove the gutter.

    4

Remove the rubber grommet on the passenger's side of the engine compartment using a pair of pliers.

    5

Poke through the material in the grommet hole using a thin, metal rod. You should see the rod appear in the passenger compartment of your GTI.

    6

Run the wires through the hole and hook up the gauges. Reattach the rain gutter and its clips. Reinstall the rubber trim and close the hood.
