How to Disable the Fuel Pump Circuit on an 87 Ranger

The Ford Ranger pickup was introduced in 1983 to replace the Mazda-sourced Courier pickup. The 1987 Ranger was equipped with a 2.0-liter, 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder, a 2.3-liter turbo diesel, or a 2.9-liter V-6 engine. The 2.3- and 2.9-liter gasoline engines are fuel-injected. These engines feature an inertia switch that shuts off the fuel pump in case of collision. This switch can be used to disable the fuel system. Removing the fuel pump relay will also disable the system.

Instructions

    1

Park the Ranger on a level, surface and set the parking brake.

    2

Locate the inertia switch. It is located on the left side of the passenger foot well, where the back of the firewall meets the transmission hump. You will have to pull back the top of the carpet to see it. It has a red colored button on top of it. That is the reset button.

    3

Lift the tab on the electrical connector and disconnect it. The fuel pump is disabled. To relieve fuel system pressure, open the gas cap and start the engine. Let it run until it dies. Crank the engine over for a few seconds. Fuel pressure is relieved.

    4

Locate the fuel pump relay. It is on the passenger fender, above the wheel-well and to the rear of the starter solenoid. Remove the relay to disable the fuel pump. Fuel pressure is relieved the same way.
