How to Change a High Tail Light in a 2001 Lexus IS300

The Lexus IS300's high tail light is located on the rear deck and shines through the rear window when the headlights are turned on or the brake pedal is pressed. Occasionally, the light bulb will burn out and need replacing. The bulb is changed from inside the vehicle and requires no special tools.

Instructions

    1

Position yourself so that you are looking out the back window. Release the plastic clips on the front of the high tail light housing, sliding the flat-head screwdriver between the rear deck and the tail light housing, exactly 1 inch from each corner (there are two). Lift up gently on the tail light housing, tilting it towards the rear window.

    2

Pull the tail light slightly towards the front of the vehicle to release it completely from the rear deck. Turn the tail light housing upside-down and set it down on the rear deck to reveal the tail light wire harness and the light bulb socket.

    3

Twist the light bulb socket one-quarter turn counterclockwise and lift strait up to separate the light bulb socket from the tail light housing. Pull the old light bulb out of the light bulb socket, gently.

    4

Press the new 921 light bulb into place, gently. Place the light bulb socket back into position and turn it clockwise until it clips into place.

    5

Flip the tail light housing right-side-up again, and tilt it towards the rear window. Slide front plastic hooks under the rear dead lid and lower the tail light housing down so that it sits on the rear deck. Push down gently on the tail light housing until it clips into place.
