How to Remove Parking Lot Scratches From a Car's Finish

Some people park on the other side of the parking lot in hopes of avoiding scratches on their cars from the carelessness of others. However, no matter what you do to try to prevent these parking lot scratches, they still happen. Because these scratches are often shallow and only scratch the finish of your car and not the paint, they are typically easy to repair yourself. Scratches that are deeper require painting.

Instructions

    1

Wash the area thoroughly to ensure that dirt on your car does not cause further damage as you fix the scratch.

    2

Rub aerosol tar or adhesive remover over the spot to try to remove it. A mark that is more difficult to remove may be more easily removed with paint thinner or nail polish remover. If the scratch is actually plastic residue or paint from the other car or parking lot pole, these elements can remove the scratch without damaging the underlying paint or clear coat.

    3

Wet the scratched area of your car, as well as the sandpaper, and gently sand the area using small strokes at 60-degree angles from the scratch. Keep the surface on which you are working and the sandpaper wet throughout the process to avoid further scratches. Sand until the scratch is barely detectable.

    4

Dry the sanded area fully before moving on in the process.

    5

Apply rubbing compound to the sanded area and use the power buffer to buff it into the scratched area. Continue buffing until the haze created by the rubbing compound begins to disappear. Finish the buffing process by hand with a soft, auto-detailing rag to finish the finer details.

    6

Cover the area in a new coat of car wax to reestablish the shine of your vehicle.
