How to Install an Escort ZR3's Laser Shifter

The Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter is a popular way to defend against receiving speeding tickets because of radar guns. When the Laser Shifter detects a radar gun close by, it will alert you, giving you time to slow down. Be aware that laser shifters are illegal in many states. Consult with your state's DMV to be sure they are not illegal. The Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter contains front and rear laser shifters, along with a display unit.

Instructions

Front Laser Shifters

    1

Place the mounting bracket around your vehicle's front license plate.

    2

Use a drill to drill holes on the bracket and through the vehicle's frame. Be careful not to crack the body of your vehicle as it will make it extremely difficult to install the mounting bracket.

    3

Attach the bracket using the supplied screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    4

Place both shifters onto the bracket and secure them with the accompanied screws. Make sure the shifters have an unobstructed view of the road.

Rear Laser Shifters

    5

Remove the rear license plate screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    6

Place the rear mounting bracket onto the rear license plate, making sure not to obscure the license plate. Attach the bracket using the accompanied screws to replace the old license plate screws.

    7

Attach the rear shifter to the bracket and run the shifter's wire through the trunk. Connect the rear shifter wire to the interface in the jack labeled "Rear Shifter."

Laser Shifter Cables

    8

Open the hood of the vehicle and disconnect the battery with a socket wrench.

    9

Run the laser shifter cables underneath the vehicle and attach them to the firewall using the included zip-ties.

    10

Run both cables through an opening in the firewall. Plug both cables into the jacks marked "Front Shifter 1" and "Front Shifter 2" on the shifter interface. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.

Interface Unit

    11

Mount the unit to the dashboard using the provided zip-ties.

    12

Attach the provided 3M connector to the interface's electrical connector.

    13

Connect the electrical connector of the interface to any available connection on your vehicle. For most vehicles, the easiest connector to reach is the radio's connection, but some vehicles also have connections in the glove compartment or under the steering wheel.
