How to Change the Thermostat in a 1995 Chevy S10

When the thermostat in your 1995 Chevy S10 fails it can leave you sitting on the side of the road with an overheated engine or possibly at a repair facility waiting on an engine rebuild. Thermostats are designed to fail in the open position that will make your engine run cooler but this is not always the case. If your S10 is no longer heating up it's likely that your thermostat has failed. It should be changed because it's possible that it could close and not open back up.

Instructions

    1

Locate the thermostat housing on the intake manifold. The thermostat housing is connected to the radiator hose that extends from the top of the radiator and is located on the front left-hand side of the intake manifold.

    2

Remove the three bolts that hold the thermostat housing onto the the intake manifold with an adjustable box wrench. The bolts should be placed off to the side because they will be used again.

    3

Pull the housing off of the intake manifold and remove the thermostat. It sits under the housing, inside of the intake manifold. It is not bolted into place and should pull out with ease. Discard the gasket that was between the thermostat housing and intake manifold.

    4

Place the new thermostat into the intake manifold. The thermostat will only fit into the hole in one direction. It should not be placed in the hole upside down. If it is, the thermostat housing will not bolt onto the intake manifold properly.

    5

Place the gasket onto the intake manifold and place the intake housing on top of it. Make sure the bolt holes on the housing line up with the bolt holes on the S10's intake manifold. Place "never-cease" onto the bolts and bolt the housing back to the intake manifold.
