How to Change the Brakes on a 2003 S40 Volvo

The Volvo S40 has disc brakes on all its wheels. Changing the brakes on the car is not hard to do, and you can expect to spend about 30 minutes completing each wheel. You can change the brake pads in your driveway, which eliminates the need of taking the car to a garage, and paying high labor costs.

Instructions

    1

Park the Volvo on a level surface and turn the key off. Open the engine compartment and siphon of the brake fluid from the master cylinder using the turkey baster. Place the fluid in the drain pan for recycling. Place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels of the Volvo. Raise the car with the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the car near the jacking point and raise it to the frame.

    2

Remove the lug nuts from the wheel using the lug wrench. Pull the wheel from the car. Remove the spring clip from the brake pads. Tap the retaining pins from the brake pads using the 3mm punch and the small hammer. Loosen the caliper bolts with a socket and ratchet. Lift the caliper from the carrier. Pull the brake pads from the assembly. Clean the entire assembly thoroughly with the wire brush. Press the piston back into the caliper housing with the caliper tool.

    3

Place the new brake pads on the carrier and slide the caliper down over them. Secure the caliper guide bolts using the socket and ratchet to tighten them. Tap the retaining pins into the brake pads. Install the wheel on the car and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the Volvo and lower the car to the ground. Repeat the process on the other wheel.

    4

Check the brake fluid level and add to it as necessary. Pump the brakes several times until the pedal is firm.
